In short

1Who we are

SideQuest is an app for planning adventures with the people you care about and keeping them as memories. SideQuest is responsible for the personal data described here (the “controller” under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR).

2What we keep

Your account

Your email address (to sign in), username, display name, profile photo and bio if you add them, and your settings, such as which notifications you want.

What you create

SideQuests, projects and memories, with their titles, dates, places and stories; photos and videos you add; artifacts like tickets and receipts; routes and the places on them; chapters, answers to memory questions, and how you arrange your bookshelf and books.

Photos are re-saved when you add them, which drops the location data your camera stores inside them. Videos are kept as recorded, so they can still contain the location your phone stored in the file.

People

Who you are friends with, who you invite to SideQuests and projects, and their replies.

Notifications

The notifications we show you, and, if you allow push notifications, a push token that lets us reach this phone.

Technical data

Our hosting provider keeps short-lived logs of requests (for example time and IP address) to keep the service secure and working.

3What stays on your phone

4How we use it, and why we may

What forLegal basis (GDPR)
Running SideQuestTo provide the service you signed up for: storing your memories, showing them to you and the people you share with, sign-in, invitations (Art. 6(1)(b), contract).
Push notificationsOnly if you allow them on your phone (consent). You can turn them off any time.
SideQuest+To give you what you paid for and keep track of your subscription (contract).
Optional sponsored videosPersonalised ads only with your consent; otherwise non-personalised ads (consent; legitimate interest in confirming a video was watched).
Security and abuse preventionKeeping accounts and private content safe (Art. 6(1)(f), legitimate interest).

We don't use your content to train AI, we don't profile you for advertising, and we don't sell personal data.

5Who sees your content

You decide. Each SideQuest and memory has a privacy setting, and only the people it allows can see it. People you invite see the SideQuests and projects they're invited to. Others can find your profile by name or username, but your bio is only shown if you choose to show it.

Reporting and blocking. You can report a person, a SideQuest, a memory or a photo, and block anyone. A report contains what you reported, the reason and any note you add; only our team sees it, and the person you report isn't told who reported them. We keep reports as long as needed to handle them and keep SideQuest safe. Blocking someone ends your connection and stops friend requests and invitations both ways; only you can see who you blocked.

6Services we use

These companies help us run SideQuest. They process data only for that purpose, under contracts that protect it. Some are based outside the European Economic Area; transfers then rely on safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

7Ads

SideQuest has no banners and no ads in your memories, bookshelf or profile. If you don't have SideQuest+, you can choose to watch a short sponsored video to unlock a Relive film. Only then do we load an ad from Google AdMob.

8SideQuest+

Subscriptions are bought and billed through Apple or Google. We never see your card or bank details. RevenueCat tells our server whether your subscription is active and until when, so we can unlock SideQuest+ on all your devices. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID or Google Play settings.

9How long we keep it

We keep your account and content for as long as you use SideQuest. When you delete something, it's removed from the app straight away and from our storage soon after. When your account is deleted, we delete your profile, your SideQuests, memories, photos, videos and everything else you created. Backups are overwritten within 30 days. Records we must keep by law, such as purchase records held by Apple or Google, follow their own rules.

10Your rights

You can ask us to show you the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, give you a copy in a common format, or stop or limit how we use it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. You can delete your account yourself in the app under Settings → Delete account (how it works). For anything else, email us at the address in section 1. We'll answer within a month.

If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to a data protection authority. In the Netherlands, that is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

11Children

SideQuest is not meant for children under 16. We don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has an account, let us know and we'll remove it.

12Changes to this policy

When we change how we handle your data, we update this page and the date at the top. For important changes, we'll also tell you in the app.
